In this topic we describe the main forms of statistical data exploration. These involve the use of graphics and visualization techniques to illustrate datasets and to help identify important features of these data, and techniques known under the broad heading of "Exploratory data analysis". The latter includes the use of visualization techniques, but often utilizing specific forms of visualization that help the user understand the data rather than having a primary function to communicate results to others.
